Chiller value swings widely based on a handful of factors, and the most important is almost always condition. A running, recently-serviced chiller with clean coils and a known maintenance history is worth multiples of the same unit sitting dormant. Tonnage matters next: the resale market is strongest for 150–1,500 ton commercial chillers, with centrifugals typically commanding the highest offers on a per-ton basis.

Age and refrigerant are both critical — R-134a and R-1234ze units hold value far better than older R-22 or R-123 machines, which often sell mostly for the copper content in their tube bundles. Brand pedigree (York, Carrier, Trane, McQuay, Johnson Controls, Daikin, Multistack) is also a factor, as is completeness: original controls, VFDs, and starters in place will push an offer meaningfully higher than a partially stripped unit.
