Silo and Storage Tank Demolition: How These Jobs Get Priced

Silos and tanks look like simple structures — a cylinder, some steel or concrete, a roof. The demolition itself usually is simple. What makes these projects expensive and occasionally dangerous is everything that has to happen before a cutting torch comes anywhere near them.
Rule one: it is a cleaning job first
Any vessel that held product holds residue. Fuel tanks retain vapor long after they read empty. Chemical tanks hold sludge in the bottom knuckle. Grain and feed silos hold dust that is itself explosive, plus whatever fumigant history came with it. Process tanks hold whatever the plant ran.
Before demolition, a vessel has to be emptied, cleaned, and — for anything that held flammables — degassed and certified gas-free by a marine chemist or qualified person. Hot work on an uncleaned tank is one of the most reliable ways to kill people in this industry. There is no version of this project where that step is optional or compressed.
Rule two: it is confined-space work
Interior cleaning means confined space entry under a full permit program: atmospheric monitoring, ventilation, attendant, retrieval equipment, and a rescue plan that does not rely on calling 911 and hoping. Crews need the training and the paperwork, and the schedule needs to accommodate the monitoring.
If a contractor talks about tank demolition without mentioning gas-free certification or confined space, that is the whole review you need.
What drives the price
Residue volume and character. Clean water tank versus a diesel tank with sludge versus a chemical vessel with regulated waste — these are wildly different disposal bills. Residue is often the single largest cost on a tank job, and it is priced by the gallon or drum with manifested disposal.
Construction. Welded steel tanks are cut. Bolted tanks come apart in panels and sometimes have resale value intact. Concrete silos are broken mechanically or, on large jobs, dropped — a specialty operation with engineering behind it. Concrete silos also generate serious tonnage.
Height and access. Tall vertical structures mean elevated work, cranes or aerial lifts, drop zones, and exclusion areas. If a tank sits inside a live plant next to operating equipment, protection and sequencing add cost fast.
Foundations and containment. Ring walls, pile caps, and concrete containment dikes are their own removal scope. Contaminated soil under a leaking tank turns a demolition project into an environmental one — a possibility worth investigating before you bid it.
Regulatory status. Underground storage tanks carry a distinct closure process in Florida — notification, closure assessment, and often soil and groundwater sampling — and that path is governed by the state's UST rules, not by demolition rules.
How the steel comes out
Once a vessel is verified clean and gas-free, the demolition is methodical: cut access, remove appurtenances and piping, then take the shell down in controlled sections, usually top-down with a crane or from a high-reach machine. Large jobs sometimes remove a tank shell in wall sections that are laid down flat and cut up on the ground, which is safer and faster than working at height.
What you get back
Steel tanks yield scrap by weight, and thick-plate shells are heavy melt — a good grade. Stainless vessels are worth substantially more and should never be mixed into the ferrous pile. Bolted tanks, food-grade stainless vessels, and clean pressure vessels sometimes sell whole for reuse, which beats scrap by a wide margin.
Everything else in the vicinity is usually worth appraising at the same time: the pumps, motors, and switchgear that served the vessel, transfer piping, heat exchangers, and any refrigeration or boiler equipment tied into the same process. That is standard practice in a plant cleanup scope.
Sequencing inside a bigger decommissioning
On a plant closure, tanks usually come near the end: production equipment is isolated and removed first, process lines are drained and flushed, then vessels are cleaned and removed, then structures. Doing tanks early tends to strand piping and utilities that other removals still needed.

What did the vessel hold, and when was it last in service? Is there a gas-free certification path, and who signs it? What is the residue volume and its waste classification? Is the tank above or below ground? Does the foundation and containment come out? Is there any spill history at that location?
With those answers, tank demolition prices cleanly. Without them, any quote is a guess with your safety attached to it.
