Compressed air is expensive to make and expensive to buy new. A well-chosen used rotary screw compressor delivers the same air for a fraction of the capital cost and none of the factory lead time — which is why it is one of the most consistently sensible used-equipment purchases a plant can make.

Here is how to buy one without inheriting somebody else's problem.

Size it by CFM and pressure, not horsepower

Horsepower is a shorthand that hides the actual question. What you need is CFM at your required pressure.

Add up the consumption of every air-using device at its duty cycle, add a realistic allowance for leaks — in an older plant, leakage is frequently a large share of total demand — and add headroom for growth. Then determine the lowest pressure that satisfies your highest-pressure device. Every extra 2 psi of system pressure costs roughly 1% more energy, forever.

The classic mistake is buying big "to be safe." An oversized fixed-speed compressor short-cycles, wastes energy unloaded, and wears itself out. If your demand swings, a variable-speed drive machine is worth paying more for.

Rotary screw vs. reciprocating

Rotary screw is the industrial default: continuous duty, quieter, smoother air delivery, longer service life. Almost every used industrial compressor worth buying is a screw machine.

Reciprocating compressors suit intermittent duty and small shops. They are cheaper and simpler but noisier and not built for running all day.

Oil-free machines are required for food, pharmaceutical, electronics, and some finishing applications. They cost considerably more used and new. If your process does not require oil-free, a lubricated machine with good filtration is the better value.

Hours and what they mean

Ask for hours, and ask for loaded hours if the controller reports them — a machine that ran 40,000 hours mostly unloaded has less airend wear than one that ran 25,000 fully loaded.

Rotary screw airends are engineered for long service lives, and a mid-hours machine with documented maintenance has plenty of life left. A rebuilt airend, documented, effectively resets that clock. Treat undocumented hours as a reason to discount, not necessarily to walk.

The inspection checklist

Before you commit:

  • Run it under load. Verify it builds and holds pressure, and watch the amp draw.
  • Check the discharge temperature. High discharge temp points to cooler or oil problems.
  • Look at the oil and the separator. Fresh oil and a recent separator change are good signs; sludge is not.
  • Inspect the cooler. In Florida, dusty and humid environments plug coolers, and an overheating machine trips out.
  • Listen to the airend. Bearing noise or vibration means a rebuild is in your future.
  • Check the controller for fault history and confirm the display works.
  • Verify the motor — insulation resistance test if you can.
  • Confirm the drive — for VSD machines, the drive is expensive to replace and worth verifying under load.
  • Ask why it was removed. A plant closure is the best answer. "It kept tripping" is a different conversation.

Do not forget the dryer and the tank

Air out of a compressor is saturated, and in Florida humidity, undried compressed air ruins tools, valves, and finishes fast. A refrigerated dryer is the minimum for most industrial service; desiccant dryers are needed for low dew points and outdoor lines.

You also need a receiver tank sized for your demand swings, filtration, and condensate management. Buying a package — compressor, dryer, tank, filters — from the same source is usually cheaper and always simpler than assembling it piecemeal.

Where good used compressors come from

The best used machines come out of facility closures and consolidations, not from failures. When a plant shuts down, its compressor room was typically under a service contract right up to the last day. Installation notes for Florida

Give the machine ventilation — compressor rooms run hot and Florida ambient makes it worse. Size the room's air exchange for the heat rejection, keep the intake clean and cool, and plan condensate drainage. Coastal installations should account for salt air on the cooler and cabinet.
