On most demolition projects the largest single cost is not knocking the building down. It is moving what used to be the building somewhere else.

Concrete is heavy, trucks carry a limited amount, tipping costs money, and every load is a round trip priced by cycle time. On a substantial concrete structure, hauling can be the majority of the project cost.

The alternative

Bring a crusher to the site, process the clean concrete into aggregate, and use it on the parcel as fill, base or backfill. Nothing leaves, nothing has to be imported, and the disposal line item largely disappears.

When it works, the saving is dramatic. Two costs are removed — hauling out and hauling fill back in — and the tipping fee goes with them.

Where the break-even sits

Mobilizing a crusher is not cheap. There is transport, setup, an operator, fuel, and typically a minimum period. That fixed cost has to be spread across enough tonnage to beat the per-load hauling economics.

The variables that decide it:

Tonnage. The dominant factor. Small jobs never justify it; large concrete structures almost always do.

Haul distance. The further to the recycler or landfill, the earlier crushing pencils. Rural sites — Marion County, inland Polk, the Panhandle — reach break-even at lower tonnage than urban jobs with a facility ten minutes away.

Tipping fees. Vary considerably by region and rise sharply after a storm event.

Whether the site can use the product. This is the one that decides many projects. Crushed concrete is only free fill if the parcel needs fill. If it has to be hauled off anyway, you have paid for a crusher and saved nothing but a small volume reduction.

Future use of the parcel. A site being redeveloped with a building pad needs base material. A site being sold as raw land may not.

The requirements you need to check

On-site crushing is a permitted activity in most jurisdictions, with air quality, noise and hours requirements. Some places require a specific permit for portable crushing equipment, some regulate it under a general permit, and some have local noise ordinances that restrict when it can run.

There are also material requirements. Recycled concrete aggregate used as engineered fill needs to meet specification, which means the feed has to be genuinely clean — free of rebar beyond what the crusher can separate, free of wood, plaster, asphalt and general debris. Contaminated feed produces material nobody will accept.

Separation makes or breaks it

The economics depend entirely on clean separation during demolition. Concrete goes one way, structural steel another, wood and general debris a third. That requires deliberate sequencing and more machine time than mixing everything into one pile.

It also produces a second benefit: separated structural steel and non-ferrous metal have real scrap value, which offsets cost rather than adding to it. Mixed debris has none.

Dust and noise

A crusher is loud and generates dust. On a rural site that is manageable. On a site adjacent to occupied buildings it may not be, regardless of what the numbers say — water suppression and enclosure help, and there is a limit.

That is worth assessing honestly before committing, because a crusher shut down by complaints after a week is the worst of both outcomes.

How we price it

On any job with enough concrete tonnage to make it a real question, we price both ways and show both. Crushing is not always the answer, and presenting it as the obvious choice on a job where the site cannot use the product is not doing the owner any favours.

The question to ask a contractor is whether they have run the comparison, and what the numbers were.
