All of that activity puts used chillers on the market and creates demand for them. Here is how to navigate it as a buyer.

Where Atlanta's used chillers come from

Central plant replacements are the biggest source. When a building upgrades its plant for efficiency or refrigerant reasons, the outgoing chiller is often still serviceable. Data center refreshes produce late-model air-cooled units with low hours. Plant closures and building demolitions produce the whole range, from water-cooled centrifugals in older towers to package air-cooled screws behind manufacturing facilities.

Sizing for Georgia

Refrigerant

Chillers on older refrigerants are still common in Atlanta's building stock. A used unit on a current refrigerant is easier to service and is worth more. Inspection and testing

Do not buy a used chiller on a photo and a nameplate. Confirm the model and tonnage. Check the compressor hours and the service history. Look at the tube sheets and the condenser and evaporator condition. Verify the refrigerant charge and check for leaks. Look at the controls and whether they are current. And, if the unit can be run, run it under load and log the operating conditions.

Delivery and rigging

Chillers go into mechanical rooms, onto roofs, and into basements, and the crane and rigging plan is where the installation cost lives. Confirm the route into the building and the rigging requirement before buying a unit, and ask whether the seller can coordinate the rigging or is handing you a chiller on a flatbed.
